The Bras group live in isolation far inland in the foothills of the central mountain ranges. They have seldom been contacted by Westerners. They live in tree-houses high off the ground as a defensive measure. Their shields are their only sculptural form. The front face of the shield is carved with relief images, which are meant to give spiritual protection.
These shields have been reproduced by craftsmen in Cameroon.
