Many forms of wax cast objects are found all over West Africa. They were used as a form of currency and to provide status to the owner. Their value lay in the metal itself, and in the amount of ornamentation. This object has been made using the lost wax method of casting. This method involves producing a perfect wax model of an object which is then coated in clay slip and more clay.  A small hole is left between the wax object and the outside so that, when the clay is fired, the wax can run out.  The space left behind is then filled with molten bronze to produce only one bronze object from each wax model. These heads are typical representations of Benin royalty.
